Three-bedroom beach houses at Ocean Lakes, compared

Short answer: we manage seven homes with three bedrooms inside Ocean Lakes Family Campground, and they are genuinely different animals. Some have private elevators and take dogs. Some sit close to the sand with ocean views off the deck. One is a three-bedroom that sleeps ten, which is unusual enough that it deserves its own paragraph. Pick by how you'll spend the week, not by the bedroom count.

Here's the thing worth knowing before you start comparing: all of our homes are inside Ocean Lakes, off South Kings Highway at the southern end of Myrtle Beach, about a mile past Myrtle Beach State Park heading south. That means the choice between them is a choice about a street inside a gated campground rather than a choice between neighbourhoods across the Grand Strand. Everything else — the beach, the water park, the Game Center, the oceanfront playgrounds — you share regardless of which house you book.

The dog comes too: the elevator house

Pet-Friendly Ocean Lakes Beach House | Elevator + Limo Golf Cart | Sleeps 6 is the one to look at if you're travelling with a dog or with anyone who doesn't love stairs. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, six guests: two queens and a full.

Raised beach houses mean steps, and steps mean hauling coolers, a week of groceries, folding chairs and a beach wagon up them twice a day. This house has a private elevator, and guests write about it more than anything else in the place. It's also the one that solves a trip where a grandparent is coming and nobody wants to say out loud that the stairs are the problem.

The pet side is set up properly rather than just permitted: a covered porch with a locking gate, which anyone who has chased a terrier down a campground road will appreciate, and Ocean Lakes keeps a dog park with DIY wash stations, which matters after a dog has been in salt water. Downstairs there's an outdoor hangout area with a TV, a grill and cornhole, so the space under the house earns its keep on the evenings nobody wants to drive anywhere. The home includes a complimentary limo golf cart for licensed drivers 25 and older.

Two kings, a bunk room, and sand six houses away

If the point of the trip is the ocean and not much else, Ocean View Ocean Lakes 3BR | 6th House to Beach | Golf Cart | Sleeps 6 puts you six houses back from the beach with partial ocean views from a covered private deck.

Being that close changes how the day runs. You go down at sunrise, come back for breakfast, go again after lunch, and nobody has to pack as though they're leaving for six hours. Forgetting the sunscreen stops being an event.

The bed layout is the other reason this one gets booked. Two king bedrooms and a twin-over-twin bunk room is a specific, useful arrangement: two couples travelling together each get a real bed rather than one pair drawing the short straw, and the kids get the room they actually want. The deck has the seating to match, which is where you'll end up most evenings. No pets at this one, so if the dog is coming, it's the elevator house.

Three bedrooms, ten people

Most three-bedroom homes cap out around six. The Crab Shack sleeps ten in three bedrooms and two bathrooms, steps from the beach, with ocean views and a golf cart included. It was renovated recently.

That's a different proposition and worth being honest about. Ten people sharing two bathrooms on a beach morning is a real thing to think through, and the sleeping is denser than a four or five-bedroom house. But if you're a family group who mostly wants to be outside and in the water, and you'd rather put the budget into location than into bedroom doors, this is the one that does a job the others can't.

If that density sounds like a squeeze, the fix is to go up a size rather than sideways. Ocean Lakes 4BR Beach House | 2 Golf Carts | Steps to Beach | Sleeps 11 gives eleven guests four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two carts, which is a materially easier week for a group that size. The Deep Blue, in the quieter southern end of the campground, counts 192 steps to the sand and sleeps twelve across five bedrooms. I mention both because people searching "three-bedroom" are usually counting beds, not bedrooms, and sometimes the right answer is one more room.

What actually decides the week

Families book on bedroom count and then spend the week caring about four other things. From watching several hundred arrivals, these are the ones:

  • The golf cart. Many of our homes include one, and it's the amenity guests talk about afterwards more than any other. Ocean Lakes is big enough that the cart is transport, not a novelty: the beach, the Game Center, the market, the recreation areas. Drivers must be 25 or older with a valid licence, and the campground's cart rules apply. The limo cart at the elevator house fits the whole group in one trip.

  • The kitchen. Every home has a full one, with linens and beds made on arrival and a washer in the house. Sand, salt and a toddler make laundry a daily event, not a departure-day event.

  • Outdoor space. A deck, a porch or a grill area is where a beach vacation actually happens after five o'clock. The three-bedrooms each handle this differently: a covered deck at the ocean-view house, a downstairs entertainment area with an outdoor TV and cornhole at the elevator house.

  • Wi-Fi. Free and fast in the homes, which matters on the afternoon it rains and matters more if someone is working a day of the trip.

What you get by staying inside the gate

Ocean Lakes has nearly a mile of Atlantic beachfront and twenty beach access points, which is the real reason people book here instead of a condo tower. You're not hunting a public parking space in July.

Beyond the sand there's the water park, the Game Center, a recreation centre, oceanfront playgrounds, basketball, sand volleyball, cornhole, shuffleboard, horseshoes, a skate park, fishing, bicycle rentals, beachfront workout stations and seasonal family activities. On Magnolia Lake, the nature centre's discovery lab keeps live marine life and hands-on displays, and it's the thing kids remember from a rainy morning. Sandy's Meet N' Eat handles the evening nobody wants to cook.

Ocean Lakes is rebuilding its Sandy Harbor aquatic facilities: the original indoor pool, outdoor pool and mini golf closed in September 2026 for construction, with new facilities planned for Memorial Day weekend 2027, including a much larger indoor aquatic area with body slides, a children's splash pool, an expanded Game Center and a new outdoor pool with cabanas. The separate Sandy Harbor Water Park runs on its seasonal schedule. If you're booking between now and that reopening, check the current operating schedule for your dates. Operating hours shift with season, weather and construction.

Days that start at the house and end back on the porch

You can run a full week without leaving the campground, and plenty of our guests do. For the days you want out, the useful thing is knowing how the Grand Strand lays out from here. You're at the southern end, which puts the quiet stuff south of you and the loud stuff north.

South. Myrtle Beach State Park is a few miles down Highway 17, with fishing, picnicking and short, easy walking trails: the Yaupon Trail is under half a mile, reached from the nature centre parking area. Keep going and you reach Murrells Inlet, roughly twenty minutes depending on summer traffic, where the MarshWalk runs along a saltwater estuary past a run of seafood restaurants: Wicked Tuna, Drunken Jack's, Dead Dog Saloon, Bovine's, Creek Ratz, The Claw House, Wahoo's Fish House, Gulfstream Cafe. The Hot Fish Club has been feeding the inlet since the 1940s. It gets going around dinner, and the live music comes with it. Further south, Brookgreen Gardens swaps the beach entirely for sculpture, gardens and native animals.

North. Broadway at the Beach is about six miles up, which is where Ripley's Aquarium lives and where you go when the forecast is bad and the kids are feral. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and the SkyWheel are a classic evening, a little over a mile of oceanfront with arcades and restaurants. The Market Common, closer to you, is the calmer option: restaurants, shops, a cinema, bowling and fountains to walk off dinner around. River City Cafe, burgers and fries, is under two miles from the campground gate for the night when nobody has the energy for a plan.

Charter fishing and watersports run out of the inlet, and the Grand Strand's golf courses are the other reason people drive here rather than fly. If golf is the point of the trip, the three-bedrooms work well for a foursome minus one, and the cart stays useful for everything else.

Before you book

Two practical things. Ocean Lakes requires a vehicle pass for every car entering the campground, bought separately from your rental, and there's a per-day discount for completing Express Check-In at least two weeks before you arrive. And check-in is at four, check-out at ten, which is worth knowing if you're driving in from Charleston or Wilmington, both a little over an hour and a half away.

We're a family-owned, licensed manager on site, and you book direct with us. Rates, minimum stays and availability move around with the calendar, so message the rental team with your dates and group and we'll tell you straight which of these three fits, or whether you'd be happier in a four-bedroom. If the dog is coming or someone can't manage stairs, say so first: that narrows it faster than anything else.
